Mountain Tension

The Targa Florio reached its glorious peak in the 1960s when teams from Porsche, Ferrari and Alfa Romeo battled it out for supremacy. In 1968 Porsche and Alfa were the main protagonists, their smaller 2 and 2.2 litre cars being well suited to the sinuous Madonie circuit. Here the 2 litre Alfa Romeo T33/2 of Belgian pairing Gosselin and Trosch leads the Porsche 907 of eventual winners Vic Elford and Umberto Maglioli as they charge over a mountainous section. Gosselin and Trosch were forced to retire but the sister cars of Galli/Giunti and Bianchi/Casoni finished 2nd and 3rd.
