Speed Demons

t was John Wyer's Slough based JWA team who made the Porsche 917 competitive and their starring role in Steve McQueen's Le Mans has meant that the blue and orange cars and their livery have passed into legend so it is ironic that the Gulf sponsored 917s never won the 24 hour race with which they have become synonymous. By 1971, Porsche was a dominant force in sportscar racing and at Le Mans, no fewer than 6 Flat 12 917s lined up against 8 V12 Ferrari 512s - a sight and sound which hasn't been repeated or bettered in the half century since. Pedro Rodriguez's pole lap would not be bettered for 18 years but his long tail Gulf 917 retired with engine failure. Against the spirit - if not the letter - of their agreement with JWA, the Porsche factory provided works support for the Martini Racing team whose 917K driven by Gijs Van Lennep and current Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko streaks past the pits on its way to the Dunlop Bridge and a famous victory. It is chased by the similar Gulf 917 of Attwood and Muller and Mark Donohue's famous NART Sunoco Ferrari which was the fastest Ferrari in practice.
